The Claw Watch Nobody Queues For

Every serious brand keeps two kinds of watch. There is the hero — the one with the waiting list and the auction record. And there is the soul-keeper: the watch that tells you what the brand is. The most essential one.

For most houses it is easy. Patek has the Calatrava. Rolex, beneath all the Daytona heat, has the Datejust. Omega?

The Speedmaster is the hero, and a magnificent one. But its meaning is an event — the Moon.

The Seamaster has the same problem in a different suit. Its meaning is a character — Bond, a borrowed man on loan from a film studio, renegotiated every few years.

A brand’s soul cannot be an event or a character.

So look at what Omega reaches for when it has to be itself, wordlessly, in public. Above the boutique door. Over the baggage belt in Zurich. It is the Constellation — the modern one. The griffes gripping the bezel at three and nine, the flat symmetric dial, the star. The claw-watch nobody queues for and half the people find a bit dull.

That is not decoration. That is confession - we measure time, precisely, and we have since 1848. The whole reason the company took the name Omega — the last word, the final measure.
